WINTER SWIM LESSONS

Southbury Parks and Recreation will offer swim lessons on weekends during the winter months at Pomperaug High School.

Swim Lessons for Winter 2025 will take place at PHS beginning the weekend of January 11/12, 2025 and concluding the weekend of March 22/23, 2025.

There will be NO LESSONS the weekend of February 15/16, 2025 due to Region 15 winter break. Cancellations due to weather will not be made up.

Lesson options are as follows:

Saturday 12:10 – 12:40pm     Parent/Tot swim lesson

This is an introduction to water where the parent/guardian is in the water with the child. Children will enjoy splashing, floating, kicking, and group activities with parents and other children their age. The goal is to acclimate our youngest pre-swimmers to an aquatic environment at an early age so they are comfortable, happy and ready to learn the basic swimming skills at the next level without a parent.  Any children who are not potty-trained MUST wear a swimming diaper AND a bathing suit OR plastic pants.

This program is for children ages 6 months to 3 years old.

Sunday 12:10 – 12:40pm     Preschool/Beginner swim lesson

This beginner lesson for 3 to 6 year olds, enables younger, newer swimmers to enjoy the water without a parent/guardian. Together with instructors, they will take part in various games, songs and activities designed to make them comfortable in the water while providing the basics needed to swim. The goal of this lesson will be for the child to build confidence in the water and begin to feel comfortable with breath holding, putting their face in, blowing bubbles, bobbing with bubbles, and forward movement.

Sunday 12:10 – 12:40pm     Basic Skills swim lesson

In this beginner lesson for ages 7 to 13 year olds, swimmers will be encouraged to build confidence in shallow and deep water. Instruction will be tailored to the swimmer skill level with instructors helping to train on deck and in the water. Each lesson will be geared toward necessary swim skills and may include floating, streamline, kicking, arm rotation and proper breathing. Swimmers will be instructed on how to coordinate arms and legs when swimming freestyle with rotary breathing. Similar instruction in backstroke will be introduced. The goal will be for swimmers to attempt to swim a full lap without holding on to the wall or stopping.

Saturday and/or Sunday 12:50 – 1:30pm
Level 5/Pre-Swim Team swim lesson

This lesson will provide more advanced instruction. Swimmers must already be able swim one lap of front crawl and some sort of backstroke. While building confidence in the water, swimmers will work on getting their arms out of the water, rotary breathing and proper kicking form. Focus will be on helping swimmers coordinate all three to be able to swim smoothly, with practice emphasizing freestyle and backstroke technique.  The goal is to swim 2 laps of freestyle without stopping, and 2 laps of backstroke without stopping, using learned techniques. Racing starts will be introduced.

Swimmers may enroll in Saturday or Sunday Level 5 lessons, or may enroll in both lessons for extra instruction and practice. Full weekend enrollment will be discounted.

Swim Lesson Need to Know:

Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your child’s lesson so they benefit from the entire lesson and do not have to join once the lesson is underway.

Children should arrive for lessons in their swim suit. Children with long hair should have their hair tied up in a ponytail. Please have goggles for your child if they want to wear them. The pool will not supply goggles.

Once arriving on the pool deck, we ask that all parents wait with their child until called by the instructor. All parents are then asked to remain on the benches away from the poolside. We encourage you to watch the lesson but advise that you refrain from approaching the lesson or calling out to your child, which will distract the swimmers. Please remain in your viewing spot throughout the entire lesson.

Instructors reserve the right to determine your child’s skill level and adjust instruction as necessary.

All Region 15 weather and cancellations will be followed. Please check for lesson notifications or alerts on the MyRec Home page .

Program registration is for the totality of the program.
